Short answer: The best catch weight software is an ERP where catch weight is native, not a partner add-on: every order, pick and invoice line carries the case count and the actual weight, each weighed case ties to its lot, and the weighed invoice posts to the general ledger in the same system. Foodline AI is built that way for independent food distributors. Oracle NetSuite says catch weight is built into its food and beverage edition. FreshByte, NetYield, Seasoft and Food Connex are category specialists with catch weight at the core. SAP Business One, Acumatica and Sage X3 get it from partner add-ons, and Infor documents limits on where catch weight is tracked.

Catch weight is the actual weight of a variable-weight case: boxed beef, whole fish, a wheel of cheese. The customer orders cases and pays by the pound, so the software has to carry two quantities on every line. Most ERPs were built around one. This guide compares 15 systems food distributors evaluate on how, and whether, they handle it. For what the software has to do at each step, start with catch weight software.

How we compared

Five checks, applied the same way to every system:

  1. 01
Native or add-on. Is catch weight part of the product, or a partner module with its own license and upgrade cycle?
  2. 02
Count and weight on every line. Does each order, pick and invoice line carry both the case count and the actual weight?
  3. 03
Lot tie. Is each weighed case tied to its lot for trace-backs and recalls?
  4. 04
General ledger in the same system. Does the weighed invoice post to A/R and the ledger without an export to accounting software?
  5. 05
Who implements. The vendor itself, or partners?

Sources are the vendor's own pages, or a named partner's page where the vendor's site doesn't describe catch weight. Each is linked in its entry and was checked October 3 to 5, 2026. Every entry copies the catch-weight facts from our one-to-one comparison page for that system, which has the full side-by-side. Editions, modules and add-ons change, so confirm each point with the vendor for the edition you would license.

Disclosure: Foodline AI publishes this guide and makes one of the systems in it. We don't publish prices vendors don't publish, and we don't rate or score products. Corrections: hello@foodlineai.com.

The 15 systems, one by one

Foodline AI

AI-native ERP built only for independent food distributors. Catch weight is native: ordered, shipped and invoiced weight are tracked as three numbers, with FEFO and FIFO lot control and backward and forward trace with recall drills (platform). The branded B2B store, FSMA 204 records, routes and the general ledger, financial statements and bill pay share one record (finance hub). Foodline AI migrates your data itself; guided implementation runs 35 or 75 days, month to month (pricing).

Oracle NetSuite

NetSuite says variable-weight pricing, lot tracing, FEFO allocation and catch-weight invoicing are built into its core food and beverage ERP (netsuite.com food and beverage). NetSuite partners also sell catch-weight SuiteApps for dual-unit handling, for example Beyond Cloud Consulting, and lot trace reporting is a SuiteApp (Oracle docs). B2B ecommerce is an add-on module, and NetSuite says over 60% of implementations are performed by partners. Compare: NetSuite vs Foodline AI.

FreshByte

Fresh food distribution ERP, in the industry since 1990. Catch weight at receiving, order entry and invoicing, with lot tracking through repacking and processing and repack yield tracking (freshbyte.com FAQ, platform). A full general ledger and lot traceability with FSMA 204 reporting are included. Online ordering, EDI, warehousing and cloud hosting are add-on modules. Compare: FreshByte vs Foodline AI.

NetYield

A cloud, weight-based ERP built for seafood companies. Three levels of units of measure, quantities and prices by case or pound, catch weights updated on pick lists, and lotted inventory with full traceability and custom lot attributes (netyield.com software, distributors). A/R, A/P and the general ledger are integrated. Compare: NetYield vs Foodline AI.

Seasoft (CAI Software)

CAI Software's ERP for seafood processors and distributors. Packing stations capture weights from scales and update actual shipped quantities on each invoice, with lot inventory and aging, attribute tracking (shellfish tags, country of origin, grade) and individually lotted fish (caisoft.com Seasoft). Accounting and financials, a web sales portal and production yields run in the same system. Compare: Seasoft vs Foodline AI.

Food Connex (CAI Software)

CAI Software's cloud ERP for food distributors, processors and manufacturers. Catch or variable weights are core: packing stations capture weights from integrated scales onto barcoded labels, with lot inventory and aging, attributes such as grade and origin, and cost and profit by lot (caisoft.com Food Connex). Case breaking is core too. Accounting runs through its QuickBooks integration. Compare: Food Connex vs Foodline AI.

Produce Pro (Aptean)

ERP for fresh produce and perishables, in use since 1990 and owned by Aptean since 2022. "You can buy and sell in any unit of measure, in any volume," with tracking for splits, broken items, repacks and processing, and lot-level traceability "since day one" (Produce Pro software). Catch weight isn't mentioned on the pages reviewed. Compare: Produce Pro vs Foodline AI.

NECS entrée

Installed food distribution ERP that NECS has developed since 1987 and says 1,500+ food distributors use. Catch weight, breaking cases, and lot control and traceability are supported (necs.com version5). It includes its own general ledger, and online ordering is an optional module. Compare: NECS entrée vs Foodline AI.

Infor Distribution SX.e

Infor's distribution ERP inside Infor CloudSuite Distribution. Lot-controlled products get lot numbers at receipt and are tracked through transfers (Infor docs: lots). Catch weight captures actual weight at receiving and shipping, but "is not tracked through all inventory functions, such as transfers, cycle counts, physical inventory," and isn't supported for the Rhythm for Commerce integration (Infor docs: catch weight). Compare: Infor vs Foodline AI.

SAP Business One

SAP's ERP for small and midsize businesses. Batch and serial number management with expiration dates is standard (SAP Learning). Catch weight comes from partner add-ons, such as the Produmex WMS integration described by partner Vision33 or CompuTec WMS. Partners implement and support it. Compare: SAP Business One vs Foodline AI.

Acumatica

Cloud ERP sold through reseller partners. Its Distribution Edition tracks products by lot or serial number (acumatica.com distribution); catch weight isn't listed on that page. Partner add-ons provide it: SimplyFood Catch Weight requires the Distribution Edition and lists at $395 a month on top of Acumatica (SimplyFood pricing), and Net at Work pairs Acumatica with Prime FoodService (Net at Work). Compare: Acumatica vs Foodline AI.

Sage 100

Installed ERP for small and midsize businesses that Sage says is best suited to US-based, single-entity businesses. Lot and serial tracking, and "track every item or batch from receipt to sale" (sage.com distribution, sage.com Sage 100). Catch weight isn't listed among the distribution capabilities. Compare: Sage 100 vs Foodline AI.

Epicor Prophet 21

Distribution ERP whose listed industries are durable goods; food isn't on the list. Its warehouse system scans every item, bin, lot and serial movement, captures lot attributes at receiving, license-plates below the item and lot level, and keeps full product genealogy (epicor.com Prophet 21 WMS). Catch weight isn't mentioned on the pages reviewed. Compare: Prophet 21 vs Foodline AI.

FlexiBake

Cloud ERP for bakeries and food manufacturers, built around recipes, production planning and standing orders. Ingredient lot tracking, product batch traceability and instant recalls come in the Professional plan and up (flexibake.com pricing). Catch-weight invoicing isn't listed among FlexiBake's features (flexibake.com). Compare: FlexiBake vs Foodline AI.

Systems without native catch weight

QuickBooks

is built around one quantity per invoice line, so it does not natively carry a case count and an actual weight together. QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise can track lot numbers and expiration dates and set customer price rules on its higher tiers, but catch weights end up in add-ons and spreadsheets. See the QuickBooks alternative for food distributors.

Produce Pro and Epicor Prophet 21 don't mention catch weight on the pages we reviewed; their entries above say what those pages do cover.

Frequently asked questions

Which ERP is best for catch weight?

One where catch weight is native, not a partner add-on; every order, pick and invoice line carries count and weight; each weighed case ties to its lot; and the weighed invoice posts to the general ledger in the same system. Foodline AI is built that way for independent food distributors.

Is catch weight built into NetSuite?

NetSuite says so. Its food and beverage page states that variable-weight pricing, lot tracing, FEFO allocation and catch-weight invoicing are built into its core food and beverage ERP. NetSuite partners also sell catch-weight SuiteApps for dual-unit handling, and lot trace reporting is a SuiteApp. Confirm what your edition includes.

Does Acumatica handle catch weight?

Through partner add-ons, per the pages we reviewed. Acumatica's Distribution Edition page lists lot and serial tracking but not catch weight. SimplyFood Catch Weight requires the Distribution Edition and lists at $395 a month on top of Acumatica, and Net at Work pairs Acumatica with Prime FoodService.

What should catch weight software do?

Carry the case count and the actual weight on every order, pick and invoice line; capture weight at receiving and at pick; keep on-hand pounds in step with on-hand cases; tie every weighed case to its lot; price per pound by customer; and post the weighed invoice to the general ledger without an export. ---
